New internists will strengthen care for hospitalized patients and increase access to specialist consultations in outpatient clinics.

HAWKESBURY, September 28, 2026 – Hawkesbury and District General Hospital (HGH) is pleased to announce that new internists will join its medical team this fall. Their arrival will strengthen HGH’s internal medicine expertise and its capacity to provide specialized care to hospitalized patients and those seen in its outpatient clinics. 

Internal medicine is a specialty focused on assessing, diagnosing and managing health conditions in adults, particularly when a patient’s situation is complex or requires further investigation. 

An important role throughout the patient’s care 

For hospitalized patients, internists help assess and manage complex medical conditions. They work with other physicians, clinical teams and health care professionals to provide comprehensive care and support continuity of care. 

In outpatient clinics, internists assess patients with multiple health conditions or diagnoses that may affect one another, persistent or unexplained symptoms, or a combination of risk factors, medical conditions and treatments that calls for specialist assessment.

Greater capacity to meet the population’s needs 

Expanding the team will allow HGH to accept more new internal medicine consultations and provide specialized expertise to more patients. 

Internal medicine can help investigate symptoms whose cause remains unclear and support the care of patients living with two or more health conditions. It can also help assess certain women’s health concerns when multiple symptoms, risk factors, or conditions need to be considered together. 

Internists work with family physicians, other specialists and health care professionals to help establish diagnoses and guide care according to each patient’s needs. 

Internal medicine consultations at HGH require a referral from a physician or another authorized health care professional.
