You must have a referral from your physician to book an appointment with a surgeon from the HGH General Surgery Clinic.

About The Program

Before your appointment

  1. Your physician will fax us a request.
  2. We will call you to schedule an appointment. It may take a few weeks or up to several months before we call you, depending on the specialists’ availability.

What to bring

  • Valid Health Card
  • List of all your medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, supplements and herbal medicines
  • List of allergies

When you arrive

  • Please use the Main Entrance and register at one of the self-serve kiosks at least 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment. Clerks are available to help with the registration process.
  • Take a pager when registering. It will buzz and light up when your turn comes up and indicate in which room to report.
Room numbers and other public interest messages are presented on the TV screens.

Initial consultation before a surgery

  • A nurse will review and update your medical record and perform a general health assessment.
  • You will then meet the surgeon, who will assess the need for surgery and answer your questions.
  • If surgery is needed, your surgeon will explain the recommended procedure and discuss health risks and benefits.
  • If you wish to proceed with the surgery, the hospital will initiate the booking process. Your surgery may be performed at the Minor Surgery Clinic or in one of the operating rooms in Perioperative Services.

Booking surgery date

  • After the initial consultation with the surgeon, we will call you to book a pre-operative clinic appointment and confirm the date of your surgery.
  • It could take several weeks or months before we call you to confirm dates. The wait time for your surgery will depend on the priority code assigned to your case. Urgent cases are treated first.
  • During the booking call, we will let you if any test is required prior to your surgery. We will also give you preparation instructions for your surgery.
